John O'Sullivan, early 19th century

What a day! I just talked to farmer Bill who told me Daniel O’Connell died! That’s unbelievable, our great hero passed away… I was part of so many political meeting he held; he was such a gifted speaker. Many people say this meeting will surely be the biggest ones our time ever has seen. I see the biggest one of them right before my eyes: It took him two hours to get through the cloud it was an awesome feeling to stand near with him. And now he is dead? I’m sure it was no natural death. What did farmer Bill say? He died on a pilgrimage? I don’t think so! He was arrested soon after the biggest meeting; I bet my little John Junior it was no natural death. I’m sure they were afraid of him because he was our first man to stand for parliament in more than a hundred years. They were afraid Catholics could become too powerful, just like the traitors in Ulster who hope Ireland will stay with the Union. But one thing shall be assured: No matter if O’Connell believed in human rights or not and non-violent protest, we don’t have any rights at all; we will fight for our country! I have to ask Carol where our pitchfork is…
